Public Works Department

The Public Works Department maintains and oversees the following areas: Parks, Sewer, Solid Waste, Streets, Snow Removal, Water and Waste Water Treatment.

Custer City has approximately 30 miles of paved and graveled streets and 8 miles of graveled alleys that they maintain. There is also approximately 100 acres of parks that is also maintained by the city, in addition to other recreational facilities: including a skateboard park, tennis and volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and the swimming pool.

The crew is responsible for inspection and maintenance of the city's  25 miles of water mains, 20 miles of sewer mains, 10 wells, which produce high quality water (treated with fluoride and chlorine), 3 iron removal plants, 1water booster station, and 5 water storage facilities, with storage for 1,230,000 gallons of water.

All crew members are required to obtain and maintain certification for water treatment, water distribution, as well as wastewater collection. The Custer Water Department has received the State of South Dakota Merit Award for Excellence in Operations and Maintenance numerous times.

The Custer Wastewater Treatment Plant which sets 1 miles east of the City was built in 1986 with a treatment capacity of 565 thousand gallons per day. The majority of the wastewater flows by gravity to the facility where it is treated.

The plant consistently operates within the discharge permit parameters. Since the facility was built in 1986, it has been awarded the South Dakota Excellence in Operations and Maintenance award numerous times.
